Ayurvedic Treatments:
Abhyanga (Traditional Ayurvedic Massage)
Abhayanga is the most common and important Ayurvedic massage; it is a combination of synchronized soothing and
long strokes that help in restoring balance and re-establishing calmness and harmony in the body. The body is
massaged in seven different positions. The principal benefit of Abhyanga is based on the application of oil on
the entire body. The pressure, duration, and type of oil are carefully selected based on the prakriti (equilibrium
state of body and mind) and vikriti (distrubed state of body and mind) of the person.
Benefits of Abhyanga
It promotes healing of the body at a micro-cellular level as the oils used are absorbed into the intra dermal and
intra follicular layers of the skin.
It removes tiredness, increases immunity and improves sleep.
It removes physiological imbalances and ensures the correct balance is maintained.
It makes joints and muscles more flexible, increases the softness in glands of the skin.
Shirodhara
“Shiro” means head and “dhara” means continuously pouring liquid. Shirodhara is a therapy of pouring warm medicated oil continously in a steady and rhythmic way on the forehead for 30 – 45 mins. This is followed by an Abhyanga massage for 15 to 20 minutes involving the application of medicated oil all over the body, including the head and the feet. The oil runs over the temple, scalp and down through the hair, inducing restorative sensations as the person drifts into the sub-conscious mind and even the realm of dreams.
Depending on the body type and season, oil / milk / buttermilk/herbal decoctions can be used to enhance the
therapeutic benefit of this treatment. When an ingredient other than oil is used, the name of the treatment and its
benefits change. Takradhara and Ksheeradhara are advised in warmer months of the year.
Benefits of Shirodhra
Taila (oil) shirodhara- it gives deep relaxation to the central nervous system and aslo revitalizes the system. It
regulates and activates the nervous system and harmonizes the hormonal system. It removes imbalances such
as insomnia, headache, migrane, anxiety and high blood pressure.
Takradhara- (Medicated buttermilk-diluted yoghurt) - is known to help in alleviating psoriasis and diabetes.
Takradhara works wonders on people with a predominant pitta constitution.
Ksheeradhara (medicated milk) – a good remedy for insomnia. This massage works well on people with pitta
constitution. This is a good remedy for insomnia and an excellent treatment as it cools, relaxes and alleviates
burning sensation in the body.
Udwarthanam
Udwarthanam is a specialized herbal treatment of the entire body in 6 different positions, in which instead of oil, special medicinal powders are used to rub on the skin. Dry powders used in this treatment stimulate the hair follicles and fat cells in order to break down the subcutaneous fat while retaining the texture and complexion of the skin, without causing wrinkles and sagging.

It reduces the obesity, increases the metabolic rate.

Sarvanga dhara
This is a combination of two classical Ayurvedic therapies -
sudation (induces perspiration) and oelation (involves saturation of the body with herbal
and medicated oil via external and internal oelation to make it soft, thereby disintegrating the doshas). This begins with massaging the whole body by pouring large quantities of warm medicated oil all over from head to toe with one hand and massaging with other hand, done together by two therapists in special rhythmic movements. The procedure culminates with a gentle massage and the excess oil on the body is removed.

It protects one from illness and builds up the immunity for a healthy life.
This is the best procedure in reducing the tiredness, dryness, arthritis and joint pain.
This specialized treatment helps prevent and alleviate skeletal and muscular ailments.
Choorna Pinda Swedam
This massage is done with different herbal powders like triphala, sathapushpa, musta, manjistha,
jatamansi and kolakulthadi. It can be done snigdha (oil) or rooksha (dry) based on the condition of person.
This begins with application of oil and massaging the entire body for 30-45 mins in the 7 positions
by two therapists on either side of the body. The body is than subjected to exude sweat profusely
after a thorough massage of herbal powders made in to boluses.

It produces therapeutic sweat and relaxes the muscles.
This is very good treatment to reduce stress induced pain in any
joints, backache or any kind of the body ache.
It reduces the obecity and toxins in body cells.
Patra Pinda Swedam
Patra pinda is one of the best rejuvenating treatments in Ayurveda;
herbal leaves are selected in order to relieve pain, stiffness, and
inflammation and also rejuvenate and strengthen weak muscles. This process begins with the application of oil and a full body massage with mild pressure on either side with the help of finely chopped herbal leaves, which are warmed in medicated oil and bundled into boluses. These boluses are frequently warmed during the process.

This promotes better circulation and relieves body strain.
Chronic back pain, sciatica, loss of sensation, cramps, osteoarthritis,
arthritis and spondylosis can be treated by this treatment.
It reduces the aging process of the body and beautifies the skin.
It induces sound sleep.
Navara Kizhi
‘Navara,’ the special rice, is cooked in a kashaya (special blend of cow’s milk and specific herbs) and tied in boluses. Massage is done with these boluses. The temperature of the boluses is maintained by constantly dipping it in the kashaya. The process is continued till the kashaya and / or the Navara is exhausted. Adequate pressure is applied during this process.

It strengthens the emaciated and weak muscles of the body.
It opens out the pores and rejuvenates the skin.
It is a strengthening treatment in neurological disorders.
This is a highly rejuvenating and nourishing treatment.
Kati Vasti
Kati Vasti is a localized form of swedana (sudation) therapy. This treatment
helps in correcting the primary lifestyle issue of lower back pain, which is due to inter-vertebral inflammation.
In this procedure, warm medicated oil or herbal decoction is allowed to stay inside a bund constructed over the sacral or lumber region.
As and when the temperature of the oil drops the therapist replenishes it.
Benefits
It relives the back pain and stiffness.
Is also very helpful in prolapsed disc, lumbar spondylisis, osteoporosis, sciatica.
Janu Vasti
In Sanskrit, Janu refers to the knee joint. Warm medicated oil or herbal decoction is allowed
to stay inside a bund constructed over the affected knee(s). Rest of the treatment procedure as in Kati Vasti
Benefits
It reduces the knee pain and stiffness and also osteo arthritis of knee joint.
It enhances the strength of the knee joint by increasing circulation.
Uro Vasti
Warm medicated oil is allowed to stay inside a bund constructed over the chest. Rest of the treatment procedure is as described in Kati Vasti.
Pichu
Cotton swabs soaked in warm medicated oil are placed at various parts of the body that are under pain.
The cotton swab is changed accordingly to maintain its warmth. Pichu is proven to be a good treatment in
handling pain and stiffness in joints, as well as serving as a muscle relaxant.
Nasyam
Prescribed medicated oil / herbal decoction /herbal powder is administered into nostrils, one after the other. Complete facial and chest steam is given before this treatment to ensure less congestion in the lungs and the airways and gargling with lukewarm water is given after the procedure.

It helps to reduce the sinusitis, migrane, and headache.
It also helpful in neck, throat, and ear problems.
It helps reduce Stiffness in the head, neck, teeth and jaw.
Netratarpanam
Netratarpanam is special treatment for eye ailments. It is procedure for the oleation of eyes. A special bund is constructed over the eyes and medicated ghee or herbal decoction is allowed to stay inside the bund for 20-30 mins. As and when the temperature of the ghee or decoction drops the therapist replenishes it.
Benefits
This treatment relives the eyestrain and eye related problems of vata and pitta issues.
It provides a cooling effect to irritation in the eyes.
It reduces the dark under-eye circles and is also effective for eye pressure (intra occular pressure).
It gives purity and clearer vision to eyesight and makes and makes the vascular system of eyes stronger.
Thalapothichil
The head is covered with a medicated paste prepared in buttermilk or some decoctions suitable for the condition and
then the head is covered with a banana leaf.
Benefits
Effective for dealing with stress, anxiety, chronic headache, sleep disorders and hair loss.
Head and shoulder massage
Designed to give special concentrated attention to the head, neck and the shoulders, this massage leaves you feeling light, relaxed and refreshed.
Back Massage
A combination of long and soothing strokes along the entire length of the spine help remove the stiffness, improve blood circulation and stimulate the nerves around the spine.
